HENLEY STYLE RACING
The morning events are head-to-head races with each race consisting of two crews racing side by side up the course. The two crews posting the fastest times from the morning time trials will race in a final in the afternoon.
Events with an odd number of entries will have one crew race alone as a time trial or in a third lane if available on race day.
TIME TRIALS AND FINALS
We will run head-to-head time trials in the morning for all crews. For each event the names of all selected crews are placed on pieces of paper which are then drawn at random. These crews are then placed on pre-determined positions on the draw chart, as far apart as possible. The remaining qualifying crews are then drawn from the hat, filling in from the top of the draw chart downwards, until all places have been filled.
The two crews posting the fastest times from the morning head-to head time trials will race in a final in the afternoon.
Lane draws will be posted online by Wednesday of the event week at 5PM.
FACILITIES
Portable sanitary facilities will be located at 110 N. B Street.
Concessions providing food, beverages, t-shirts, and posters will be located on top of the levy at the GMRC storage shed.
THE RACE COURSE
The Great Miami River in downtown Hamilton provides a superb venue for rowing. The area between the Hamilton Low Dam (lower dam) and the Two-Mile Low Dam (upper dam) is an untapped rowing resource with limited power boat access. The river has high man-made levy walls that are soft and can easily absorb wakes.
The 1,850 meter course is on the Great Miami River. The starting line is at the Columbia Bridge and runs north to the finish line south Black Street Bridge.
The race course will be marked with buoys about 50 meters apart.
Starting marshals located above the start line will assist as crews order themselves by bow marker and event.
After launching and when finished racing, boats must proceed back to the dock and wait in line for a spot to open on the upstream side of docks.
All competitors are responsible for being familiar with the course. Please consult the attached course map.
VIEWING
The levy provides a very sheltered canal-like river. Leave your binoculars at home, the view of the race course is perfect in Hamilton. Additionally, the levy shelters the water so that the course only gets rough or unrowable when the wind conditions are very severe.
COURSE SAFETY
Competitors and coxswains must review the course maps carefully to locate shallow areas and bad water. The river is closed to all boat traffic during the race.
WARM-UP
Each entrant must be in the starting/marshalling area five (5) minutes prior to their scheduled starting time. The dockmaster will make two calls for launching crews 50 and 40minutes prior to the start times.
The warm-up lane is located on the western shoreline and continues south under the Columbia Bridge. The course then takes up 2-3 lanes in the middle and eastern lanes and runs north.
RACING
While racing, boats must stay on the designated buoyed racecourse. Oar blades may go over buoys but the hull of the shell must stay on the course.
FINISH
The finish is clearly marked by two large buoys. Once beyond the buoys, crews must immediately turn and continue towards the dock area.
PROTESTS
All protests must be filed within 30 minutes of the end of the race in which the violation occurred. The crew’s coxswain or representative rower/sculler must indicate the crew’s intent to file a protest to the course marshal at the finish line or to the dockmaster on shore at the docks/launching area.
Protest forms are available at the Race Control/Communications tent near the finish line. Protest forms must be filed directly with a USRA race official. Have a representative from the protesting crew available during the judge and referee deliberations.
A $25 filing fee is required at the time a protest is filed. In the event the protest is upheld, the fee will be returned. If the protest is denied, the fee will be forfeited.
AWARDS
All medals or ribbons will be awarded at the Awards Tent located near Control Commission. Gold medals/ribbons will be awarded to the top finisher in each division.
Any events under protest may delay the awarding of medals for that event. All protests will be adjudicated by US Rowing officials at the officials’ meeting following the final race of the day. Medals not awarded or retrieved 30 minutes after the last race will be mailed after the event.
