The schedule changes from year to year based on the availability of most rowers and the rowing equipment. We try to make the schedule based on the preferences of the majority of the club.
The Season
During the fall season rowers train over long distances
and compete in "head races." These races are rowed
on long stretches of river, so a straight course is hard to
find. Boats are sent across the starting line, rowing at full
speed, one by one and the times are compared.
The spring season is the sprint season. We train over
much shorter distances, as the races are about 1.25 miles and
take between 7-8 minutes. The boats are lined up across a river
or lake and they race head to head.
In the winter season, when it is too cold to train outside,
we move indoors on rowing machines called ergometers. These
are located right on campus in the Gymnasium. Additionally,
there are erg races, in which a group of ergs are connected
so athletes from opposing teams may race each other.
