Fall 2010

We have teams for boys and girls in 7th - 12th grade who are brand new to the team as well as experienced rowers. There is NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY to join! Please read about each team below and decide which team is best for you! The entire team, novice and varsity, will practice at the same time and the same site. The "novices" (beginners) will learn the basics and the varsity will continue where they left off last Spring.

About the Teams
Varsity Team: Fees TBD

August 23 - November 13
This team is for anyone in 9th-12th grade who rowed competitively during the previous school year and wishes to race. Racing is split into boys and girls events, although everyone practices together.

These students will practice 6 days per week while racing and 5 days per week the rest of the season. We will give additional days off so while we do practice 6 days per week, 5 of the 12 weeks of the season are only 5 days per week. Please see below for the listing of dates.

Junior Varsity Team: Fees TBD
August 23 - November 13
The JV Team is composed of novice rowers who have raced for at least one season. These rowers will practice with the varsity team and have the opportunity to race into the top lineups. The rowers most likely race on both the novice and varsity level during their JV season.

These students will practice 6 days per week while racing and 5 days per week the rest of the season. We will give additional days off so while we do practice 6 days per week, 5 of the 12 weeks of the season are only 5 days per week. Please see below for the listing of dates.

Novice Team: Fees TBD
September 13 - November 13

Students in 9th-12th grade with no previous rowing experience will race in the novice category. At the regattas, our novice team will go out and race other novice teams from other schools and clubs in the midwest. Racing is split into boys events and girls events.

These students will practice 5 days per week throughout the entire season. The novice team will be given the same days off the varsity and JV team have off. Please see below for the listing of dates.

JROW: Fees TBD
September 13 - October 8
This team is for students 7th-12th grade who wish to try out the sport of rowing but cannot make the time committment required for racing. Experienced JROW-ers will take an active role in teaching the inexperienced students the sport of rowing. Practice will be 2-3 days per week for 4 weeks and will be combined girls and boys. Students may begin on JROW and move to the racing team within 2 weeks of the start of the season. Novice/Varsity Racing Team classification will depend on previous experience and current skill level.

Parent Handbook
This document will give you a lot of insight into rowing and how the team operates in general. If you have any questions regarding this, please email head coach Emilie Graham.

Which Program is Right For You?

This question is best answered by your ability to race. Attendance at all practices and races is required for the Novice team. In addition, we train just like the swimmers, football players, and track stars. You must be able to participate in our training program and commit to trying your hardest every day.

If your schedule is too busy to come to practice or you want to just try rowing for fun JROW may be best for you. Many of our rowers who are unsure of whether they'll like it begin on JROW and move forward to the Novice team. You can even move mid season!

Varsity, JV & Novice Team Schedule
Varsity & JV
August 23-November 13, 2010
Monday-Friday 3:30-5:30, Saturday 8:00-11:00 AM

No athlete will be "cut" from the Great Miami Rowing Center. We believe that the bigger our team is, the stronger we are. The first few days will simply determine the level of fitness the rowers maintained over the summer and will serve as a basis for fall boat selection. This process will include running, erging, and water skill to determine muscular and cardiovascular endurance.

Novice
September 13-November 13, 2010
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, & Friday 3:30-5:30, Saturday 8:00-11:00 AM

As usual, we will be giving additional days off to use for doctor's appointments, group projects, homework catch up, etc. Please use these days wisely and plan ahead. Novice rowers will also take the scheduled appointment days off.

Appointment Days
Thursday, August 26, 2010
Monday, September 6, 2010 (Labor Day)
Thursday, September 23, 2010
Thursday, October 7, 2010
Monday, November 8, 2010

Attendance
Any athlete who wishes to race must be in attendance at all scheduled practices. We will be continuing our JROW program and those members who cannot come every day may want to continue rowing on the recreational level. Missing practice may jepoardize the athlete's seat in the racing lineup or their ability to row at all.

Tentative Regattas
This is a list of regattas that we plan on attending next fall. Please keep in mind that this list is subject to change and the most up-to-date list will be given with your welcome packet next fall. Only one overnight regatta is scheduled for this fall.

JROW Schedule
Daily Practice
JROW - September 13 - October 8, 2009
Monday, Wednesday, Friday 3:30-5:30

Attendance
Rowing is a physically demanding sport, and the learning curve is very steep. Missing practice will keep an athlete from progressing in the sport as well as hold the other members of the team back. The coach must be informed of any absences with as much notice as possible. At the latest, the coach must know before the practice prior to the one missed. If an athlete does not give advance notice, or does not inform the coach at all, the athlete will not be placed in a boat lineup during the first practice back.

Racing
Joining JROW is a good way to try the sport out and see if it's a good fit. If the athlete wishes to transfer to the racing team and begin practicing 6 days per week, they may do so before September 23rd. The difference in dues must be paid by this date as well.

Pre-Season Meetings
This meeting is mandatory for all student athletes and at least one parent/guardian. We have a lot of changes happening every year and it's important that everyone hears this information first hand. This is also the best and most efficient way we can answer any questions you may have.

Winter Training Schedule
5 Days/week
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday
3:30-5:00PM
Location To Be Determined

Indoor practice focuses on improving cardiovascular and muscular strength and developing mental strength to make it through an entire race. Race strategy is practiced and implemented during this time as well. Winter is often when most of the team bonding occurs, which solidifies the team as a whole. This is when we set the tone for the spring season and if the student is not doing another sport, it is strongly encouraged to partake in winter training. Coxswains also benefit from the winter training months because they are able to perfect their skills with the coach close at hand.

During the winter months trips are made to the Montgomery Inn Boathouse in downtown Cincinnati, which houses "rowing tanks." This is a way to more accurately simulate rowing and stroke technique can be more acutely improved.
