GMRC COVID-19 PROTOCOLS-Updated September 2021

With the resurgence of COVID-19 in the community, particularly the Delta variant, we want to provide guidance and a defined procedure on how to handle exposure scenarios within the rowing club.

As a club, we strongly encourage rowers to get vaccinated. Multiple studies have shown that vaccination is a highly effective way to protect yourself from COVID-19. This does not mean that you are 100% protected, but significantly reduces your risk of infection. Vaccination offers particularly strong protection against severe disease, which can result in hospitalization.

Based on our review of the relevant CDC and Ohio High School Athletics guidelines, we have updated our protocols for the fall season:

  1. A rower with ANY SYMPTOM OF ILLNESS should stay home and contact the coaches. The rower will not be allowed to return to practice until they have a negative COVID-19 test and are no longer showing symptoms. If the rower tests positive for COVID-19, they will be required to quarantine themselves from practice for 10 days after the symptoms first appeared and medical clearance to return.
  2. If a rower has had close contact, indoor exposure to someone who tested positive for COVID-19, the following scenarios may apply:
    1. If the rower is vaccinated, was wearing a mask during the exposure, and is not showing symptoms, they do not need to quarantine from practice.
    2. If the rower is vaccinated and was not wearing a mask during the exposure, a negative COVID test will be required to return to practice. The COVID testing must occur at least 5 days after the exposure. The rower will be allowed to return on Day 8 after the exposure, assuming no symptoms have occurred.
    3. If the rower is unvaccinated, regardless of whether they were wearing a mask, a negative COVID test will be required to return to practice. The COVID testing must occur at least 5 days after the exposure. The rower will be allowed to return on Day 8 after the exposure, assuming no symptoms have occurred.

The above protocol for quarantining and exposure only applies to indoor practices or carpooling to/from practice at this time. There is no definitive guidance from the CDC on what is considered close contact/exposure in an outdoor setting. To date, there is not much evidence of sustained COVID transmission when exercising outdoors. Our club’s outdoor practices are generally spread out and there is ideal airflow when out on the open river.

At this point in the season, it is anticipated that most, if not all practices will be held outdoors. Masks are not required for outdoor practices. During indoor workouts, masks will be mandated at this time.

Because the COVID landscape is ever-changing, we reserve the right to return to more stringent protocols, based on the guidance from the relevant authorities.
